Many preserved railways promoted special events to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the end of BR mainline steam operations. There were also several trains running on the national network for the same purpose. The exceptional hot dry summer and a few serious fires in relevant locations meant steam bans, diesel pilots and replacement diesel traction to perform all the significant work. I judged it most likely that the GCR would manage to produce the best programme and certainly operate the most important item of that time, August 1968, in 70013 OLIVER CROMWELL. So it turned out - please enjoy the pictures from four days I spent on the lineside.
