So let the rivet counting begin. From the angle of the previous photograph I could not tell if the loco on the right had the sloping throatplate boiler which would identify ACHILLES. I looked very carefully at the front of both Jubilees. Apart from the missing parts and the rope, which are entirely incidental, at first I could see no differences. Persisting I eventually noticed that the footsteps on the drop section of the running plate were of different sizes; those on the left hand engine were smaller than those on the right. Also there was evidence that the Jubilee on the left had had its smokebox door hinges polished but those on the right had not been embelished. Considering the other Jubilees, 45562 ALBERTA, 45593 KOLHAPUR and 45596 BAHAMAS were all built by North British Loco in 1934/5 with small steps whereas 45690 LEANDER, 45697 ACHILLES and 45699 GALATEA were built at Crewe by the LMS in 1936 with larger steps. I believe that the North British built locomotives had slightly smaller front footsteps that those built by the LMS at Crewe or Derby. Well it fits doesn't it? N.B. Loco was a Scottish Company always willing to save money! How about the polished hinges? 45697 ACHILLES was withdrawn before 45562 ALBERTA and 45593 KOLHAPUR which were both transferred to 55E Normanton. While at Normanton both locomotives were cleaned, polished and decorated in connection with a Royal Train working. 45562 was used but 45593 was standing bye if needed. I have confirmed with period photographs that 45562 did have polished hinge straps when withdrawn from service in early November 1967. I am confient the locomotives shown in the photograph are, from left to right, 7029 CLUN CASTLE, 45562 ALBERTA and 45697 ACHILLES.
