Sunday 22nd May 2022 was a day when the GCR offered their standard peak season public timetable. As expected it was augmented by two DALEX runs in the morning. It seems that it is impossible for the railway to deliver this timetable to the public due to a combination of factors, all of which are surely avoidable by effective management. Frequently the first departure from Loughborough is between ten and twenty minutes late. There is an insistence that the run round at Leicester North is not cut below the scheduled fifteen minutes (claimed to be so that drinks can be sold by the Leicester North tea room). The delay impinges upon the first driver training run which then results in the diesel hauled 10:15 ex-Loughborough being held at Rothley before it can access the single line to Leicester North. Another prolonged wait at Leicester North ensures that the 11:20 up from Loughborough runs extremely late; frequently ensuring that it is impossible for its steam locomotive to work the 12:50 from Loughborough to time. This sorry saga unfolded on 22nd May 2022 and I went for lunch early after the 12:00 diesel hauled train had left Loughborough almost on time. Extreme delays must have continued that seemed to result in the combination of the 12:50 and 13:00 ex-Loughborough to a single service that ran with north facing 46521 at the south end of the train and south facing 48305 at the north end of the train – a sort of tail and tail combination which I just couldn’t bring myself photograph.
