Two rail-tours featuring historic diesel locomotives were scheduled to run through the North Midlands on Saturday 27th July 2024. “The Jolly Whistler” excursion was essentially a trip from Crewe to Skegness via Manchester and Sheffield hauled by Class 40 145. The train ran very close to right time and I was able to photograph it just south of Sheffield near Woodhouse. The other train ran from Bristol to York via Birmingham, Derby and Pontefract hauled by ‘Peak’ 45 118. This train was about 10 min late early in the run but regained that time and with a very generous schedule on ‘the old road’, it passed Beighton Junction 23 min early! I had just got out of the car when it roared by – I had the greatest difficulty to recover and go to Loughborough rather than go home and sulk!
