The Railway Touring Company “White Rose” excursion from London Kings Cross to York on Saturday 15th July 2023 was steam hauled throughout the outward journey and diesel hauled, via Lincoln, on the return. The original plan had been to use Stanier Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 6233 DUCHESS OF SUTHERLAND but when this was clearly unavailable it was replaced by an admirable substitute in the form of Modified Bullied Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 5018 BRITISH INDIA LINE. Unusually time keeping was very good on the down run which meant that I was able to photograph the train at two of my three planned locations. The missing shots had nothing to do with the railway; I had forgotten completely about the major bridge replacement work at Darrington on the A1 and did not reach Milford/Sherburn until the train was right time at Church Fenton.
