Saphos Trains promoted an excursion that began on the Severn Valley Railway at Bridgnorth and ran on the mainline between Kidderminster and York. Locomotive Services Limited provided 46100 ROYAL SCOT for primary haulage but the Class 47, initially D1995, failed early in the outward journey and had to be replaced by 47 614. Time keeping was erratic on the outward run, passing Tamworth 48 minutes late and then after recovering time by cutting planned stops was 55 minutes late leaving Barrow Hill. Our plans for photography had to change and we played it safe by going all the way from Tamworth to Sherburn-in-Elmet where we photographed the passing train by then 29 minutes late. The return run started very badly also. The train departed York 45 minutes late, and, with the diesel working hard at the back, it passed Sherburn-in-Elmet 42 minutes late and Alfreton, where we took our final photographs, was passed 24 minutes late. At no time did the problems seem to be due to the steam locomotive and we had had an enjoyable day out photographing the train at four locations instead of the ambitious plan for six locations.
