The Great Central Railway was able to start running its "Santa Special" programme from 5th December 2020 although the area was placed in Tier 3 following the second national lockdown. There was one train only operating because, unfortunately but not surprisingly, the diner was not allowed to run. The steam locomotive was on the south end of the train and the locomotive, Stanier Class 8F 2-8-0 48305, had been turned for this work. The diesel locomotive on the north end of the train was English Electric type 1 Bo-Bo D8098. The steam locomotive and coaching stock were festooned with colour lights and the associated cables which detract from the pictures, but that was a small price to pay for being out and about to photograph steam again. Well done GCR.

Pleased to see that you were able to get out, to see some steam again. Withdrawal symptoms must have been approaching, even if they had not actually arrived yet. Trains covered in Christmas lights are not my personal cup of tea but, of course, they are a big attraction to Joe Public and his children. So, I agree with you, that the GCR has done very well, to get their lucrative seasonal operation underway. While the Santa trains have started later than planned, due to the national lockdown, half a Christmas cake has to be far better than none, at this very difficult time.
