With the mismatched insignia on the locomotive I decided to choose a head-on location to photograph the up train. Much of the line between Baronwood and Lazonby runs along a ledge high above the River Eden and emerges by an overbridge just north of Lazonby. I arrived in good time and waited for departure from Carlisle. Real time trains showed the train at platform 1 in Carlisle but departure was thirty minutes late. Priority had been given to DMU 158 752 working 2H93 the 14:50 from Carlisle to Leeds. So much for the new guaranteed steam paths that Network Rail has recently announced. Leaving two and a half minutes after the DMU ensured that the steam special would be delayed at every block signal along the S & C. The photograph appears to show Stanier Jubilee Class 6P 4-6-0 45627 SIERRA LEONE passing a permanent way hut as it approached Lazonby with “The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express” on Saturday 26th February 2022.
