The GCR Diesel Gala has always been a successful event with lots of trains and a good selection of motive power. 2024 was no exception although English Electric powered locomotives were very much to the fore. In fact, there was only one Sulzer engine machine in operation during my visit on Sunday 8th September. Iris, DMBS M79900, was still with us based at Loughborough and proved to be as popular as ever. It was also good to see the Blue DMU back in 3-car formation but it is a shame that the centre car is from Pressed Steel suburban Class 117 stock in contrast with the two Metropolitan Cammell Class 101 power cars. My personal preference would have been the green set with all three vehicles from the same Metropolitan Cammell works. Throughout my visit all trains ran close to booked times with a tendency for Loughborough departures to be a couple of minutes late and arrivals from Quorn slightly early. As a result, many trains crossed in the section between the A6 and the A6004 by-pass bridges. None of the above detracted from a very enjoyable day out and the rain held off throughout my visit.
