My visit to the Great Central Railway on Sunday 10th July 2022 was to a certain extent pre-arranged in that I had met people from the Triumph Razor Edge Car Club at Toddington on 28th March 2022 when their magnificent Renown, WHX 301, was celebrating its 71st birthday. I have been quite disillusioned in recent weeks with the GCR’s very poor record with late and slow running. This visit was slightly better and a degree of common sense seemed to have been employed so that, at least, the afternoon trains were able to run close to schedule. It was a glorious day with almost unbroken sunshine throughout. That of course means no visible exhaust but there would have been none anyway with high temperatures and very cautious running. The Triumph Renowns and Mayflowers completely outshone the Mk IV Ford Zephyrs but it was good to see both makes on display and I hope they were made to feel welcome so that they come again.
