A new innovation in 2024 for Vintage Trains with their “Shakespeare Express” excursions is starting from different locations across the Midlands. The first of these trials was on Sunday 26th May with departure from Derby, slightly later than the regular service leaves Birmingham. The operation involved also some interesting variations in that the outward journey was along the WR main line through Dorridge with reversal at Hatton and the train returned down the North Warwickshire line through Henley-in-Arden and Shirley. Billed for haulage by 7029 CLUN CASTLE, I told someone the previous day that I should be prepared to bet money on it being hauled actually by EARL OF MOUNT EDGCUMBE. As soon as the train came into view, I felt vindicated as I read 5043 on the smokebox numberplate!
