The main item of interest for me on Sunday 6th March 2022 was the Preston-Derby-Preston “Peaks Express” promoted by ‘The Railway Touring Company’ with WCRC steam haulage throughout. Of course I had hoped that the motive power would be easy to explain to the members of the public that always ask me “What was the name of that engine? Was it Flying Scotsman?”. If anyone can help with my reply “Well it’s actually 45699 GALATEA, but its owner decided almost three years ago to call it 45562 ALBERTA and then, nearly a year ago, put the number 45627 on the front, SIERRA LEONE nameplates on the sides but leave 45562 on the cab sides”. They think I’m barmy which may be more realistic than the present numbering of the Jubilee. Back to “The Peaks Express”; all went well until the Peak District when late running service trains delayed the steam hauled excursion, led to a change of route and disrupted everyone’s plans until it was too dark to bother. Never mind, there are more trains next weekend to photograph.
