Sunday 10th July 2016 was expected to be a normal peak season service with one diesel and two steam locomotives. We arrived later than usual as we had attended the British Speedway GP in Cardiff on Saturday evening. On reaching Kinchley Lane, we saw light engine 92214 standing on the curve leading to the Quorn straight. When we examined the road carefully it became clear that the down line was blocked by fallen vegetation. I put on my high-vis and walked towards the locomotive when I met my former colleague Driver David Upton who was hoping I had news for him about assistance from the Permanent Way team. After a couple of pictures that showed both lines to be blocked we were joined next by Steve Saunders with two bow saws and much enthusiasm! Between the three of us we quickly had most of the smaller branches cleared by the time more senior reinforcements arrived with a sizeable chain saw which could tackle the trunks and main branches. An hour or so later and telephone calls to control and the signal boxes at Quorn and Swithland saw trains running again, passing the site with caution.
