Our visit to the ELR on Friday 2nd August 2024 was, in part, a celebration of Stephen’s 44th birthday and an opportunity to enjoy some proper Yorkshire food. The only sensible travel option was a single round trip of the line starting from Heywood at 13:43, steam hauled out and back. I was surprised and delighted to find our motive power was Hunslet works number 2890; built in 1943 as a saddle tank and converted to a Class 4F 0-6-0 tender locomotive. Operation was perfect, on time in both directions and sounded great when required to work hard. Many more locomotives presented in this way would be a real boon to economical operation of heritage railways.
