The new appliance turned out to be the GCR equivalent of what is generally described as a bag-pipe. However, this was not an instrument that could be used in the Scottish tradition to play a lament but a water spray device. A few jerky pump actions and a fine aqueous mist emerged form the end of the pipe that appeared to be blown away in the breeze before it reached the ground. A twist of the nozzle on the end of the pole, some more jerky pump action and a solid jet of water emerged which was directed at the lower level of the embankment. I expected another pumping session to try to saturate the ground higher up where the flames had simply self-extinguished. I was convinced that I heard the words attributed to Mr. Punch, “That’s the way to do it.” as the triumphant quartet returned to the train.
