The Great Central Railway began meteorological spring with a special intensive timetable that involved three steam and one diesel electric locomotives and a three car diesel multiple unit. With so many trains running backwards and forwards along the line, I was in no hurry and did not arrive until late morning. The weather was fine and bright, if a little cold, and everything ran smoothly and to time right up to the final departure that was inevitably late. Why schedule a double header with the two smallest rostered locomotives that would both require to take water before their final run? Still, it didn’t spoil a very enjoyable day out.
