“The White Rose” excursion on 2nd February 2022 was promoted by Saphos Trains and ran, steam hauled by Royal Scot Class 7P 4-6-0 46100 ROYAL SCOT, between Crewe and York. On the outward journey the train crossed the Pennines between Manchester and Sheffield using the Hope Valley route. . The return, which was mostly in the dark, took the Calder Valley route from Wakefield to Manchester via Hebden Bridge. The train ran close to booked time throughout both steam hauled sections and should be regarded as a very successful operation. One detailed point of criticism of Saphos promotions is the silly ‘headboard’ that the locomotives almost always carry. At least those used by Railway Touring Company are correctly shaped!
