Conditions on the first weekend of 2026 were very frosty with predominantly blue sky. It was a difficult decision between Saturday and Sunday; the timetables were identical but I guessed the chances of snow were higher on Sunday. When I awoke on Sunday morning there was a hard frost in Ashby but still no snow. I headed for the first departure from Loughborough and to my surprise, around Thringstone, there was snow! Too much to cross the Beacon via Charley and Nanpantan Roads, so I stayed on the A512. I had a little snow for my first photographs from the A6 bridge and Fielding Road crossing and stayed for the rest of the day, although most of the snow had sublimed away by lunch-time. A great day for fresh air, steam and photography.
