The last weekend in October 2022 had very little main-line steam that could justify the time and expense so I opted instead to visit the GWSR Mixed Traction Gala. The weather forecast was not good but turned out to be accurate with fine conditions predominating throughout my visit. The Railways home steam fleet was in action and some heavy diesel electrics sometimes running in unnecessary and rather silly formations. The event was enjoyable but time-keeping was appalling with serious loss of time on the southern part of the route throughout the time I was present. Equally significant was no reason was given for this to the public and, although staff knew the reason, they were forbidden by management to pass the information to the public. That is no way to run a railway.
