The weekend if 17th – 18th June 2023 was the 50th Anniversary of the preserved Great Central Railway operating some form of passenger service to its members and the general public. The event was celebrated in some style; particularly lavish considering the serious financial conditions prevailing at this time. The main train operation involved four steam and two diesel locomotives supported by diesel multiple units to assist passengers with access to various viewing points. For a period in the late morning the weather was rather disappointing but overall, it was a hot and rather humid day. Personally, the highlight, which was a fifty-wagon freight train hauled by Class 9F 2-20-0 92214, was rather an anticlimax but I should admit that it was enjoyed by many of the observers as it recreated a once everyday sight that has not been seen for very many years.
