I was rather late leaving home for the GCR on Sunday 25th September 2022. It was not a special day with one regular steam locomotive and a home-based diesel locomotive. The attraction for me that persuaded me to visit was the expectation that Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0 46521 would take the other steam booking. The Ivatt had been away from the GCR for several weeks and will be withdrawn for overhaul in the very near future. It was essentially a routine day for the railway but I witnessed and photographed a lineside fire that provided some unexpected human interest to the day. In my lineside days I extinguished many lineside fires either alone or with a couple of other permit holders. I now can answer the Question, “How many railway personnel does it take to put out a lineside fire?” Why not look at the photographs and read the captions if you don’t know the answer.
