The weather forecast for Sunday 13yh February 2022 was very poor with 90% plus rating for rain coupled to strong winds throughout. I was tempted not to visit the GCR but after a disappointing Saturday I changed my mind when it was dry at breakfast and the rain that did fall was mostly light and showers rather than the predicted heavy downpours. The prospect of three locos in steam an unspecified DMU made me think “why not”. With no timing details for the Loughborough to Swithland crew training/re-familiarisation with 78018, I did not see as much as I had hoped but the day has to be regarded as a success with 80080 doing most of the work. It is an ideal type of locomotive for preserved/heritage lines and it will be sadly missed when its loan comes to an end all too soon.
