Official records show that the first British steam locomotive to attain 100 mph was 4472 FLYING SCOTSMAN. Even the most casual glance at the figures indicates that in all probability 4472 did not reach that magic figure but it is highly likely that it had been exceeded thirty years before by 3440 CITY OF TRURO. The Great Western 4-4-0 is preserved in the National Collection in its later superheated form carrying its final number 3717.
