The final day for 2026 Great Britain XVIII on Saturday 25th April was a run from Newcastle to London. Details were very confused involving various routes and timings that made planning for photography extremely difficult or impossible. For me, north of York was out of the question, and, seeking to avoid overhead wires, I decided to try north of Chesterfield, Cossington and Great Glen. Reports of late running were rife on social media and I opted for Tapton Junction rather than north of Barrow Hill. Bad decision, but I did not know that a water stop had been added to the schedule at Barrow Hill. The train crawled through Tapton Junction on the approach to Chesterfield but must have flown down the Erewash Valley as it was well ahead of me at Cossington! So, it had to be Great Glen and hope for the best. What I didn’t expect was overhead wires and high overhead bridges! I managed to find a location south of Wigston where I could, just, see the train. My main-line photography has reduced greatly in recent years and the experience with Great Britain XVIII has done nothing to encourage me to go out more frequently.
