I hadn’t visited the Battlefield Line in 2023 since 25th February due mainly to the lack of a visiting steam locomotive. GWR Large Prairie Tank 5199 had been at the railway for several weeks for Santa Specials duties but I prefer to visit when regular timetables are in operation. The penultimate day of the year was therefore my first real chance to see 5199 at work on normal duties. As usual the timetable was little more than a guide but I enjoyed my visit, photographed from several easy access points where I could avoid the very wet flooded ground and enjoyed my visit. I was determined to return again at the start of 2024.
