The first day of the GCR Winter Steam Gala 2022 was Friday 28th January 2022. The reduced programme for the first day involved five steam locomotives; all of which were built by BR and could be regarded as modern in comparison with many heritage railway fleets. The oldest was 34072 257 SQUADRON, built at Brighton in 1948, and the most recent was 92214, built at Swindon in 1959. Most trains ran very close to booked time but some hiccup in the afternoon led to consecutive up departures from Loughborough running progressively late. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the day was the number of people, photographers and others, that were watching the trains. That should be most encouraging for the railway’s management.
