The great Central timetable for Saturday 4th May 2024 was more ambitious than usual with two steam locomotives and one diesel and included a freight operation with both diesel and steam haulage. After a late departure from home due to shopping commitments I arrived at the Rushey lane overbridge in time to see the diesel hauled freight. Eventually, when the diesel didn’t show up, I prepared to photograph the main steam operations. After the first steam had headed south, the noise from behind indicated diesel but I was not ready to photograph 37 714 running light in the down direction. Soon after further diesel noise and 50 017 headed north with the down freight. From now things began to settle down and most other trains ran close to right time. I realised later that 37 714 was probably engaged in driver training or staff competence certification duties.
