Railway Touring Company promoted this tour as a means of returning 34028 EDDYSTONE to the London Area after its brief, one week, working holiday in the north based at Carnforth. The Chiltern Explorer ran from Manchester Piccadilly to Reading and used the recently available line between Milton Keynes and Bicester to switch between the former LNWR and GWR routes. A severe delay of almost twenty minutes at Rugby was never recovered but, from the passing times, I doubt that it was down to the locomotive.
