Sunday 7th May 2023 was the day after the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. It was proclaimed as “The Big Lunch” but standing by the GCR for me it was at best a rather small lunch. There was no train service on the GCR on Coronation Day but Sunday 7th May had a full timetable with one diesel and two steam locomotives in operation. I had no reliable information about which direction the steam locomotives were facing and, being rather late leaving home, I headed to the A6 bridge, south of Loughborough, to see the first run of ‘Steam 2’ that would also be working the diner later in the day. Both steam locomotives were facing south and the Peak is bi-directional so it was an easy and enjoyable day to secure a few more shots.
