With the GCR closed to all traffic between Loughborough and Swithland due to the replacement of two bridges either side of Quorn for effectively six weeks the resumption of through services over the April 1st – 2nd weekend was a wake-up call for us all. I was out on the main-line on the first day but I was determined to visit the GC on Sunday 2nd April 2023. It was a shame that D123 was unavailable and its replacement with the blue Metro-Cammell set shifted the age profile beyond a single era. Two steam locomotives facing in opposite directions also causes difficulties for photographers and I was caught out when the final train was worked by the engine I did not expect. It had the smaller fire-grate and so would have saved some expensive coal. You can’t blame the railway for that!
