My original intention on Saturday 14th October 2023 had been to photograph the Vintage Trains excursion running from Coleshill Parkway to Chester and return that involved a loop around the East Midlands for passenger access purposes. Unfortunately, this train was cancelled with very little warning to the general public. However, the Great Central Railway offered and attractive alternative for the half-term holiday period using both locomotives that had visited the line for the Autumn Gala the previous weekend plus one steam locomotive from the home fleet. The weather forecast was basically cold but fine with the possibility of a heavy shower. That was exactly what occurred; the sun was too bright at times but the heavy shower coincided with a change in location so I remained dry in the car while it hurled hail-stones at me!
