With the exception of the midweek Paw Patrol half-term holiday trains, Sunday 19th February 2013 was the last opportunity for the public to ride on, watch or photograph steam hauled trains on the Great Central Railway for about a month while the double track section is closed to allow for the replacement of two bridges either side of Quorn and Woodhouse Station. Between the 24th February and 24th March there will be a train service between Leicester North and Mountsorrel using the railway’s diesel multiple unit stock. The advertised service on the 19th February involved three steam locomotives and a diesel multiple unit. It came as a surprise to find that 78019 had been turned and so all three steam locomotives were facing south. This seemed to be ideal as the promised ‘double header’ departing Loughborough at 15:45 must have two locomotives facing in the same direction. Unfortunately, someone had forgotten that both locomotives have low water capacity and needed to refill before departure. The ensuing shambles involved the train running in top-and-tail configuration and almost twenty-five minutes late. Very few stayed to watch as the light had dimmed seriously and, of those that remained, very few will have pressed the button, as a means of registering their individual protests.
