Saturday 13th May 2023 was billed as a normal peak season timetable on the Great Central Railway with one diesel and two steam locomotives. However, the allocated motive power showed the steam locomotive TBA, the other steam locomotive was replaced by the green Metro-Cammell DMU and 37 714 was the expected diesel power. I decided to visit and keep an open mind about whatever might be running. Please follow the captions for more details of the motive power provided and how it changed while I was present. In the end I had seen two steam locomotives, two diesel locomotives and the DMU had not been used during my curtailed visit. The driver experience programme is important from the standpoint of income generation but it plays havoc with the public timetable that must have a negative impact of income. It is a real problem that requires a constructive response by cooperation between several managers.
