My first post-Christmas 2022 outing to visit a Heritage Railway was to the GCR on Thursday 29th December. The weather forecasts had been poor and the service very limited until that time. The steam hauled trains were booked for haulage by 92214 which had worked Winter Wonderlights trains. It was facing north and wired for the light shows so there would be no good close-up views of the locomotive. My answer is to imagine that the locomotive was under test and the cables were sending data to the test car that was monitoring performance. What a shame that Test Car 2 was not able to run behind the tender.
