This broadside view of relatively new electro-diesel class 88 004 PANDORA demonstrates that some logical thought is being applied to freight haulage on the modern railway. A 5400 HP 25 kV 50 Hz a.c. electric locomotive for the main line with a 950 HP diesel engine for movement in yards, depots and sidings. Although the diesel engine may seem underpowered it delivers the same tractive effort at low speeds as the electric option. Now was it not Adrian Mole that was "Profoundly in love with Pandora"? Perhaps he had a vision after all!
