On my way home from photographing 5043 EARL OF MOUNT EDGCUMBE, as it passed through Leicestershire with the Birmingham to Melton Mowbray leg of “The Melton Pieman” excursion, I decided to call at the GCR for a couple of trains. I had seen that the diesel locomotive on Saturday 23rd September 2023 was booked to be D6535 with 73156 and 78018 taking the steam turns. I have always liked D6535 so opted for Fielding Road, Birstall, where I can usually obtain five different views of a diesel hauled train. Things worked out as intended except that D6535 had been replaced by D123 for some undisclosed reason and 73156 was working the 12:00 from Loughborough. Just over an hour at the lineside and seven shots in the camera was quite good going in 2023.
