My post-Christmas visit to the GCR on Monday 30th December 2024 was based on a favourable weather forecast and a timetable showing just steam haulage with one engine throughout the day. I was waiting at Quorn for the first timetabled departure from Loughborough when I heard a train approaching quickly from behind. It passed Quorn non-stop hauled by 50 017 ROYAL OAK with 6990 WITHERSLACK HALL at the rear. Was this a test run or another untimetabled service? Soon 73156 arrived from Loughborough still facing north so the remainder of my intended photographs had to be at locations appropriate for down line trains; or so I thought.
