This photograph records the locomotive just before the impact. 73156 wacked into the stationary coaches, the four buffers on locomotive and coaches were fully compressed and 73156 recoiled back so far that Guard, Andrew Morley, had to request the driver to draw forward and compress the buffers so that the screw coupling could be attached. I won't name the driver but he should know better.
