"The Cathedrals Express" on Saturday 17th March 2018 ran as expected in spite of severe weather warnings for much of the country. The outward steam leg was severely delayed, particularly in the early stages. This is not surprising as the persistant side-wind must have made the load something like 600 ton. We had sun, wind and frequent blizzards but three out of my five locations produced successful photographs. At Armathwaite the guard from a down service train was enquiring about what we were expecting to see when without warning 45699 stormed through the station leaving us completely eclipsed. What's more both sun and wind were fine and the exhaust was clear of most of the train! That's life with main line steam.
