The Railway Touring Company promoted a “Stratford Flyer” excursion from Norwich to Stratford-upon-Avon and return on Saturday 1st April 2023. It was originally proposed for haulage by 6233 DUCHESS OF SUTHERLAND but this was amended to Stanier Black Five 44932. No! Despite the date this was not an ‘April Fool’. Except for delays of up to half an hour in the east that were recovered before Birmingham the train ran well but with a significant contribution from 47 804 that was attached at the rear. It was an enjoyable day out for me and I was able to photograph the moving train on six occasions. It was a pleasure to see 44932 carrying the earliest BR livery with BRITISH RAILWAYS in full on the tender sides operating the type of train that will always be associated with this type of locomotive - go anywhere and pull anything.
