The appearance of FLYING SCOTSMAN has been changing throughout its 98 year existence. It has had different boilers, different chimneys and different tenders, been driven from right and left sides and carried four different colours and five different numbers without counting prefix or suffix letters. And then there is the controversial issue of smoke deflectors. There are almost enough variations for everyone to have their own favourite without the need to share it with anyone else! However it is the nation's favourite engine and the crowds continue to turn out whenever and wherever it runs. This view shows the engine in as close as possible to its final from before it was withdrawn for private preservation in January 1963.
