Friday 24th February 2023 was the date given for BR(WR) Castle Class 7P 4-6-0 5043 EARL OF MOUNT EDGCUMBE to undertake two test runs out on the main line following the completion of its recent overhaul. In the morning it was booked to run engine and support coach from Tyseley to Stratford-upon-Avon and return. The afternoon was to see a loaded run on a circular route out via Nuneaton and Leicester and return via Loughborough, Castle Donington, Burton upon Trent and Tamworth. Everything went according to plan with the morning train that was recorded successfully when it emerged from Wood End tunnel; chosen to make the single coach load not too important! There were only two of us at this location and it was total dismay when we returned to our cars to find that www.realtimetrains.co.uk showed the afternoon train was “cancelled due to a request by the train operator”. I returned home for lunch somewhat in despair for nothing was apparently wrong with 5043 based on what I had just seen and photographed. After lunch I thought I would check www.realtimetrains.co.uk again whereupon I discovered it had left Tyseley and was running through east Birmingham a couple of minutes early. A quick reinstatement of plans and I was off to see my train at three planned locations; Burbage Common, Normanton on Soar and Clay Mills, Burton upon Trent. Why is main line steam plagued with misinformation?
