With delays earlier in the day it was necessary to change our plans and use only one location to record the southbound run of "The Northern Belle" over the Settle and Carlisle Line. The weather forecast for the northern fells was frankly diabolical so we set off north from Keighley expecting heavy rain. It was fine at Horton but starting to rain at Ribblehead with very dark sky over Whernside. There was an element of brightness in the direction of Hawes and I chose to continue towards Ais Gill. The road to Garsdale was very wet but the sky was brighter in the Ais Gill area. If you've got this far in this introduction please look at the photographs - it was hard to believe the conditions we found.
