Earlier in April 2024 I received from a friend a forwarded invitation to attend an open day organised by The Princess Margaret Rose Trust in the West Shed at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley/Swanwick. The reason for sending me this was he knew my interest (or passion) for Dynamometer Cars and Locomotive Testing. Two of the five remaining UK cars are based within the MRC complex and LMS Dynamometer Car No.1, M45050 is beautifully and sympathetically presented and I hoped they it would be outside in the daylight provided that the weather was fine and dry.
I hoped also that I might manage to see the other car, LMR Dynamometer Car No.3 M45049M that is based at the MRC. It is in the Exhibition area at Swanwick and not currently accessible to the public due to structural issues with the building. You can but hope!
With this Gallery, please take the trouble to read the captions to the photographs. Without doing so you may form the opinion that I have finally ‘lost the plot’ photographing wheels, gears and underframes, dials and switches, etc. The information in the photographs will help you understand a little of what all the fuss was about. I hope you enjoy the photographs; even a fraction of the satisfaction I had taking them would be a bonus.
