To photograph “The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express” on Saturday 29th January 2022 was a tempting day out, particularly when 45690 LEANDER was announced as the motive power. I did not know until I reached the line that 34067 TANGMERE was also included in the formation. To be honest that made me nervous; 13P on a train timed for 6P sounded like early running! Another factor came into play in the form of very strong wind. Shap did not seem to be the best place to wait for a train with gale or storm force winds likely. I opted for Yealand Redmayne for the first northbound shot of the steam then headed on to Penrith in the vain hope that the excursion might have been held to allow service trains to pass. For the southbound run I decided to play it safe, or so I thought. I had Keld to myself and then popped round to Appleby Dairy for a second shot; only to find the train had run through without stopping as booked in the working timetable. Another day when my plans were ruined by WCRC’s failure to follow the rules. Remember Wootton Bassett; you can’t rely on Nicola Sturgeon to bail you out again to save the Scottish Tourist Industry.
