Our trip to see 6233 DUCHESS OF SUTHERLAND heading North with “The Valentine’s White Rose” on Saturday 12th February 2022 was spoiled by failure to keep to the times so carefully planned by Network Rail. And I do not mean the relatively late changed, re-routing the train to reverse in Selby and access York diesel hauled on the main line. It was the extended stop in Huntingdon, not taking the stop at Stoke summit followed by some dramatic time recovery that converted 17 min late at Tallington to 2 min early entering Carlton loop. The diesel, 47 804, must have been pushing hard. The departure from Carlton loop then involved excessive use of the cylinder drains that could only have been to annoy photographers and the general public after the support crew had acted meticulously to maintain cylinder temperature while taking water. It is high time that train crews were taught some elementary thermodynamics!
